Searcher Searcher is a free application that identifies files that may contain certain types of data such as social security number, credit card number or any data pattern users wish to search for. The main purpose of this application is to find files that contain confidential information. In fact, it contains a basic module that searches for pattern of numbers that resemble Social Security number (ssn).
Searcher is a java application which runs on any computer platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux etc.) that support java 1.5 or higher. In addition, because of its pluggable design for search engines construction, Searcher's functionality can be easily extended to handle files that are encoded or compressed. Seacher also creates a log file that lists all the files identified as containing data (confidential) you wish to search for. The person who uses this application can examine this log file and take actions, accordingly or send this log file to a designated http server to be examined by IT security officer, later. To download the current version of Searcher, go to Searcher site. |
Sudoers Sudoers allows a local administrator to give certain LUAs (Least-Privileged User Account) the ability to run some (or all) applications as system administrator. Unlike Runas or any other similar products, Sudoers does not execute applications in the context of another administrator account. The user (LUA) currently logged-on to the computer can launch applications using Sudoers as if he were system administrator. The benefit of using this product is that if the application is launched by currently logged-on user (via Sudoers), it will gain access to the currently logged-on user's profile and registry, thus saving user's settings in the correct place.
This software is an ideal solution for those who use enterprise workstations with LUAs (Least-Privileged User Account), but need some specific applications to be launched with administrative privilege. In fact, restricting users with least-privilege is recommended since it prevents unintentional installation of "spyware" from user's Internet Explorer. Here are some examples:
